Cal State Northridge led virtually from wire-to-wire to capture the team championship by 12 strokes and Brian Arnold of UC Santa Barbara claimed the individual title in the Bill Cullum Invitational at The Oaks Club at Valencia.
The Matadors, who also claimed this title in 2008, posted a score of 285-294-297—876, 12-over-par, while Cal State Fullerton finished second at 297-297-295—888 to tie for second with Utah Valley, which finished at 299-298-291—888, while Weber State was fourth at 299-300-292—891.
“We’ve steadily improved our results this fall and we took advantage of our home course this week and it was obviously a confidence builder for all the guys,” Coach Jim Bracken said after the Matadors claimed their first victory since the 2010 Wyoming Cowboy Classic.
“Pacific (on Oct. 21-23) will be a good field and I think the guys will bring some confidence after this win.”’
UC San Diego totaled 295-305-298—898 to tie for fifth with Utah Statem which finished at 288-297-313—898, while UC Irvine was seventh at 303-302-300—905, and UC Santa Barbara shot 302-315-310—927 to tie for eighth with Cal State San Marcos, which wound up at 303-320-304—927, and UC Riverside was 10th at 312-306-315—933.
Arnold, a UC Santa Barbara freshman from San Marino, claimed his first college victory with a score of 67-71-75—213, while Erik Thomassen of Cal State Northridge shot 70-74-72—216 to tie for second with Harry Doig of Cal State Fullerton, who finished at 70-72-74—216, and Davis McDowell of UC San Diego was fourth at 68-75-74—217.
Reese Fisher of Weber State totaled 75-72-71—218 to tie for fifth with Esteban Jaramillo of Utah State, who wound up at 66-75-77—218, while Brady McKinla of Utah Valley was seventh at 76-73-70—219.
Pablo Ereno of UCLA posted a score of 73-75-72—220 to tie for eighth with Caden Weber of Utah Valley, who finished at 74-72-74—220, Evan Chien of UCLA at 72-74-74—220, and Paul Louis Gachet of Cal State Northridge at 68-78-74—220.
Kolbe Irei led UC Irvine in a tie for 17th at 75-75-74—224 while Josh Hu of UC Riverside shot 76-75-74—225 to finish in a tie for 21st, and Matthew Pennington of Cal State Cal State San Marcos tied for 31st at 71-78-79—228.
Rounding out the scoring for team champion Cal State Northridge were Nick Fowles in a tie for 12th at 73-72-76—221, Brandon McDonough at 74-78-73—225 in a tie for 21st that included his Matador teammates Felix Schrott at 74-75-76—225 and Thomas Burou at 72-77-76—225, while Blake Brothers tied for 25th at 78-73-75—226, and Ian McKay was 50th at 79-78-77—234.
